“Seriema No. 1” is rendered in warm copper-lit tones and layered earth colors, capturing the bird in a moment of alert watchfulness. The sweeping crest feathers and focused gaze create a striking silhouette, while fine feather textures reveal subtle flashes of the luminous copper surface beneath.

This piece is inspired by the Red-legged Seriema, a distinctive South American bird known for its expressive crest, long legs, and resonant calls that carry across open landscapes. Its upright posture and attentive expression give the portrait a sense of intelligence and lively presence.

Copper leaf on watercolor paper treated with patina, allowing oxidation and chance reactions to establish the surface. Layers of oil paint applied loosely, preserving areas of exposed copper, patina, and visible sketch marks as active elements within the work.
