“Patient Stillness” is rendered in deep, muted blues, soft neutrals, and luminous highlights, capturing a loon settled low upon its nest in a moment of quiet anticipation. The elongated form and forward gaze create a sense of calm vigilance, while the stillness of the surrounding water reinforces a feeling of suspended time. Subtle transitions in light across the plumage and surface enhance the presence of the bird, allowing it to emerge with a quiet, steady intensity.

Pure copper leaf is applied to a gesso-prepared canvas, sanded smooth and built up with sculptural texture to form the nest and water’s surface. The copper is sealed before layers of oil paint are developed, preserving areas of warmth and luminosity beneath the surface. The interplay between the textured metallic elements and the painted form allows light to move across the piece, enriching depth and creating a subtle, shifting presence.
