“Emu No. 2”

“Emu No. 2” is rendered in deep copper-shadowed tones and layered neutrals, capturing the emu in a moment of curious attention. The direct gaze and upright posture create an engaging presence, while expressive feather textures radiate outward, revealing subtle flashes of the luminous copper surface beneath.

This piece is inspired by the Emu, the large flightless bird native to Australia known for its inquisitive nature and striking orange eyes. Its alert expression and distinctive feather structure give the portrait a sense of character and quiet intensity.

Copper leaf on watercolor paper treated with patina, allowing oxidation and chance reactions to establish the surface. Layers of oil paint applied loosely, preserving areas of exposed copper, patina, and visible sketch marks as active elements within the work.
