“Cardinal No. 2” is rendered in soft gray neutrals, warm earth tones, and vivid crimson accents, capturing the bird mid-call in a moment of animated presence. The open beak and raised crest introduce a sense of movement and sound, while the simplified composition keeps the interaction intimate and closely observed. Fine linear mark-making through the crest and wing feathers creates contrast against the softened body, allowing the saturated reds to emerge sharply from the muted surrounding tones and atmospheric background.
Copper leaf on watercolor paper treated with patina, allowing oxidation and natural reactions to establish the surface. Layers of oil paint applied with a loose, responsive hand, preserving areas of exposed copper, patina, and visible mark-making as active elements within the work.
