“A Pulse Beneath” is rendered in deep earthen tones, luminous copper, and cool silvery hues, capturing a solitary fish moving quietly through a field of branching, coral-like form. The centered composition and gentle forward orientation create a sense of calm movement, while the intricate pattern surrounding the figure suggests a living structure that extends beyond what is seen. The eye is drawn to the subtle contrast between the stillness of the fish and the rhythmic complexity of its environment.
Shifts in light across the scales and the textured ground enhance a sense of depth and quiet vitality, allowing the subject to emerge with a steady, understated presence. The radiating pattern echoes the organic structure of fan coral, evoking a network of connection and flow beneath the surface. There is a quiet tension between stillness and motion, as if something continuous and unseen is moving through and around the form.
Pure copper leaf is applied to a gesso-prepared canvas, sanded smooth and built up with layered texture to create the branching structure. The copper is sealed before layers of oil paint are developed, preserving areas of warmth and luminosity beneath the surface. The interplay between the metallic ground and the painted form allows light to move across the piece, enriching depth and creating a subtle, shifting presence.
